Oakland Community Health Network is launching a new program to meet the mental health needs of children and give families an alternative to hospital emergency rooms if they have a child in crisis.
The Youth & Family Care Connection will be located in the Resource & Crisis Center, Building 34E on the Oakland County government campus, 1200 N. Telegraph Road in Pontiac.
Children age 17 and under can receive services for up to 72 hours in the eight-bed facility.
“We are genuinely excited about introducing the Youth & Family Care Connection to Oakland County residents,” said OCHN Executive Director and CEO Dana Lasenby.
“The goal is to improve care coordination with OCHN’s network providers and hospital partners, reduce extended stays in emergency departments during a mental health crisis, and, most importantly, connect families to critical care that improves outcomes for children in distress.”
OCHN has contracted with New Oakland Family Centers to manage and operate the YFCC.
“It is our great privilege to continue our collaboration with OCHN on this important new extension of youth mental health care in Oakland County,” said New Oakland President and CEO Kevin Sendi. “OCHN’s leadership is taking bold and progressive steps to address the urgent and growing need for effective, compassionate care for youth in crisis across our communities.”
Services include psychiatric evaluations, medication reviews, nursing and individual and group therapy.
Services are available to Oakland County youth and families who are uninsured, underinsured or have private insurance.
OCHN received a two-year, $5 million grant from the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration last year to expand children’s crisis services at the Resource and Crisis Center.
A portion of the building underwent renovations to house the YFCC and meet the specific needs of children.
The YFCC is not a replacement for physical health care that a hospital would provide. Families experiencing a physical health crisis should call 911 or seek help at a hospital or urgent care center. The YFCC is also not a replacement for inpatient psychiatric hospitalization.
OCHN is contracted by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to lead a provider service network that assists about 23,000 Oakland County residents at more than 300 service sites across the county.
New Oakland provides mental health and substance abuse care to more than 35,000 people annually.
