COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The Southeastern Conference wants tremendous competition. It also wants teams from both schools to have a safe experience after playing in perhaps the most frenzied arenas in college football. Wild celebrations after No. 3 Tennessee’s landmark home win over No. 6 Alabama and No. 18 LSU’s victory over 15th-ranked Mississippi turned into hefty fines for both winning schools for violating the SEC’s Access to Competition Area. Tennessee was fined $100,000 and LSU was docked $250,000. The SEC has an increasing scale on fines with violations with additional violations triggering bigger penalties.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Alabama defensive lineman Justin Eboigbe is likely out for the season with a neck injury. Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said Eboigbe had surgery to give him a better chance to play again. But Saban doesn’t think that return will come this season. Eboigbe had 11 tackles in the first four games but hasn’t seen action since. He has played in 42 games over the past three-plus seasons, recording 59 tackles. No. 6 Alabama is off this week before traveling to face No. 18 LSU on Nov. 5.
UNDATED (AP) — Schadenfreude is one of the most powerful feelings in college football. There are a lot of fans enjoying the struggles at Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Notre Dame and Miami. All four started the season highly ranked. Six victories and bowl eligibility is no sure thing for any of that group. How bad can it get?
IRVING, Texas (AP) — Kansas State quarterback Adrian Martinez and Iowa linebacker Jack Campbell were among 15 players named finalists for the William V. Campbell Trophy, an award given to college football’s top scholar-athlete. Finalists are chosen from all levels of college football by the National Football Foundation and earn an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship. The winner will be announced Dec. 6 and receive an additional $7,000 scholarship. Other finalists include Auburn kicker Anders Carlson, Stanford offensive lineman Walter Rouse and UTSA offensive lineman Ahofitu Maka.
UNDATED (AP) — It’s more of the same in Southern Conference women’s basketball, only this time the league’s contenders will be trying to chase down a defending national champion in South Carolina. It figures once again to be a difficult job for No. 5 Tennessee and No. 16 LSU and other SEC hopefuls as the Gamecocks’ centerpiece players return for another title run. The Lady Vols were picked second to South Carolina in the preseason poll and return four starters from last year’s Sweet 16 team. LSU has added several players in coach Kim Mulkey’s second year including Maryland transfer Angel Reese.
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — In 2021, South Carolina reached the Final Four but missed a pair of short shots late in a loss to Stanford. It all came together last season ago as the Gamecocks and national player of the year Aliyah Boston won the national championship. Now, coach Dawn Staley and her loaded team are looking for more. The top-ranked Gamecocks have Boston back along with plenty of talent. The nonconference slate includes a showdown with No. 2 Stanford in November and a title-game rematch with No. 6 UConn in February.
UNDATED (AP) — A year, ago, Tennessee reached the Sweet 16 in the women’s basketball tournament for the first time since 2016. The fifth-ranked Volunteers are back with an even deeper roster this season. That’s thanks to the transfer portal and a McDonald’s All-American. Tennessee wants to reach its first Final Four since 2008. The Lady Vols open the season Nov. 8 at Ohio State.
