UNDATED (AP) — UCLA coach Chip Kelly is facing his former school this weekend. Never have the stakes been this high. No. 9 UCLA plays at No. 10 Oregon in a game that will likely narrow the Pac-12′s College Football Playoff chances to two teams. Kelly lost the first two games against Oregon, but takes a much better team with him to Autzen Stadium this year. The week in college football also includes No. TCU at No. 17 at Kansas State and No. 6 Alabama at No. 24 Mississippi State.

UNDATED (AP) — Rebound is on the minds of players from No. 6 Alabama and No. 24 Mississippi State when they meet Saturday night in Tuscaloosa. The Crimson Tide are coming off a 52-49 loss at then-No. 7 Tennessee, where they were flagged 17 times for 130 yards yet still had a chance to win. Alabama’s Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Bryce Young provided a bright spot, throwing for 455 yards and two touchdowns against the Volunteers. Will Rogers also looks to lead the Bulldogs back after falling 27-17 at then-No. 22 Kentucky to halt a three-game winning streak.

ATLANTA (AP) — Top-ranked defending national champion Georgia is far from assured of a return trip to the Southeastern Conference championship game. The SEC East is making its biggest AP Top 25 power move since Florida’s Steve Spurrier and Tennessee’s Phillip Fulmer ruled the division 25 years ago. And Georgia is facing a grueling series of games in the second half of the season. Led by Georgia and No. 3 Tennessee, the East Division boasts two of the top three teams in the country for the first time since Sept. 2, 1997. In that AP Top 25 poll, No. 2 Florida was one spot ahead of No. 3 Tennessee.

STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi State says freshman offensive lineman Sam Westmoreland has died at the age of 18. Westmoreland was an industrial technology major from Tupelo who would have turned 19 on Friday. The news release announcing Westmoreland’s death did not provide details but said the school was working with the athletic department, the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office and the coroner’s office to determine facts and would not comment further. MSU coach Mike Leach said the athletics family was heartbroken by Westmoreland’s death, which he called sudden. Westmoreland was listed on the roster for the Bulldogs’ Southeastern Conference game Saturday at No. 6 Alabama but had not played this season, according to game notes.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Alabama is looking into an incident in which wide receiver Jermaine Burton appeared to make contact with a female Tennessee fan while coming off the field following Saturday’s loss. A video posted on TikTok showed Burton thrusting his right arm toward the woman’s head as she celebrated the Volunteers’ upset win, after she appeared to dance in front of his path. She could be seen holding her head while looking back at Burton afterward.  Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said he is aware of the situation and gathering more information.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — New goalposts are in place and ready for kickoff Saturday at Neyland Stadium. The third-ranked Tennessee Volunteers host UT Martin of the Football Championship Subdivision. Tennessee coach Josh Heupel says the challenge now is for the Volunteers to get better after last week’s huge win over Alabama The Vols are 6-0 and off to their best start since 1998 when they won the national championship. UT-Martin is 4-2 this season and a heavy underdog in a game that will bring more than $1 million to the school.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Kentucky coach John Calipari is long accustomed to being judged by how far his teams advance in the NCAA Tournament. The Southeastern Conference, and some of its other flourishing programs, can now relate. Teams like Kentucky, former No. 1 Auburn, Tennessee, LSU and Alabama made quicker-than-expected exits last season, with the league’s March fortunes salvaged by Arkansas’ second straight Elite Eight run. Only the Razorbacks survived the opening weekend, while the other five SEC teams lost to double-digit seeds. Auburn coach Bruce Pearl says sometimes the grind of SEC play can take a toll on teams.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Defending national champion and unanimous preseason No. 1 South Carolina is, not surprisingly, the favorite to win another Southeastern Conference title. The Gamecocks are the picks to win their seventh SEC championship in 10 seasons and third straight in voting by league and national media. The SEC didn’t release vote totals, but the pick seemed a no-brainer with South Carolina unanimously voted preseason No. 1 in The Associated Press Top 25. Aliyah Boston was named preseason player of the year. Preseason No. 5 Tennessee was picked to finish second and No. 16 LSU third.
