Here is the latest ACC sports news from The Associated Press – Corsicana Daily Sun

ATLANTA (AP) — Brennan Armstrong helped Virginia overcome a difficult start in the first quarter to account for 349 yards of total offense and help the Cavaliers snap a three-game skid with a 16-9 victory over Georgia Tech. In a matchup of the two lowest-scoring teams in the ACC, Virginia avoided an 0-4 start in conference play for the first time since 2014. The Cavaliers stopped a five-game losing streak on the road. Georgia Tech had won two straight for the first time since it had a four-game streak four years ago and was trying to move above .500 at the latest point in any season since 2018.

DALLAS (AP) — The third in-person meeting of conference commissioners who manage the College Football Playoff since August ended without a resolution on expansion, but not without optimism. The CFP management committee, comprised of 10 major college football conference commissioners and Notre Dame’s athletic director, met for six hours. They worked on a plan to triple the number of playoff teams from four to 12 for the 2024 season. Playoff Executive Director Bill Hancock says the work is ‘not finished’ and that time is running short.

UNDATED (AP) — Duke comes to Miami on Saturday for the first time since 2018. The Hurricanes have enjoyed blowout wins at Duke in each of the last two years. Duke quarterback Riley Leonard showed a ton of toughness in last week’s loss to North Carolina. He threw for 245 yards and a score while rushing for another 130 yards and a touchdown. Miami quarterback Tyler Van Dyke is getting hot again. He had 496 yards passing against North Carolina two weeks ago and 351 more against Virginia Tech last week.

UNDATED (AP) — UCLA coach Chip Kelly is facing his former school this weekend. Never have the stakes been this high. No. 9 UCLA plays at No. 10 Oregon in a game that will likely narrow the Pac-12′s College Football Playoff chances to two teams. Kelly lost the first two games against Oregon, but takes a much better team with him to Autzen Stadium this year. The week in college football also includes No. TCU at No. 17 at Kansas State and No. 6 Alabama at No. 24 Mississippi State.

UNDATED (AP) — At least one of the nine remaining unbeaten teams in the Bowl Subdivision will lose that status on Saturday when No. 14 Syracuse plays at No. 5 Clemson. The Atlantic Coast Conference game could be the last real hurdle for the Tigers to claim another Atlantic Division title. The slate also includes Virginia visiting Georgia Tech on Thursday night, Duke at Miami, Boston College at No. 13 Wake Forest and Pittsburgh at Louisville.

UNDATED (AP) — Pittsburgh running back Israel Abanikanda and North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye lead the nation in all-purpose yardage and total offense, respectively. They head a large group of ACC players among the national rankings in both categories. The group includes Syracuse quarterback Garrett Shrader and running back Sean Tucker, Clemson’s DJ Uiagalelei and Louisville’s Malik Cunningham. Many of these players have keyed strong starts for their schools along with establishing a presence in the rankings. They are a nightmare for opposing defenses, too.

UNDATED (AP) — In a matchup of the two lowest-scoring teams in the ACC, Virginia is trying to avoid a 0-4 league start for the first time since 2013. The Cavaliers have lost five straight on the road and are visitors for the third time in their last four games. Georgia Tech has won two straight and will try to move above .500 at the latest point in any season since 2018. The Yellow Jackets have consecutive victories for the first time since they won their final four ACC games in 2018.

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — No. 5 Clemson and No. 14 Syracuse square off for control of the ACC Atlantic this weekend. It is the first time in the 81-year history of Clemson’s Death Valley that two teams each 6-0 or better have played each other. Tigers coach Dabo Swinney says you shouldn’t read too much is his team’s recent history of success against the Orange because this Syracuse group is confident and capable. Syracuse is looking to continue its best start since its last undefeated season in 1987.
