ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia Tech is starting over with its football program and its athletic department overall. The school fired coach Geoff Collins after fewer than four seasons and a 10-28 record. It also got rid of athletic director Todd Stansbury. Georgia Tech plans to hire a new AD first, then let that person oversee the hiring of a new football coach.
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina’s game with South Carolina State has been moved from Saturday to Thursday night due to Hurricane Ian. The Gamecocks announced the switch Tuesday due to the approaching storm, which was expected to make landfall in Florida this week. The game was to be played at noon Saturday. It is now set for 7 p.m. Thursday. South Carolina athletic director Ray Tanner said the potential impact of the storm on the area made moving the game up the best choice in the interest of safety.
CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Clemson’s defense spent the offseason saying there’d be little drop=off after longtime leader Brent Venables left to take Oklahoma’s head coaching job. The fifth-ranked Tigers’ defensive front even had a hokey movie moniker in “The Avengers” to keep focused and on pace for another big season. These Avengers have yet to assemble this season. The Tigers are 48th in the country after finishing the past 10 years ranked among the nation’s top 25 in total defense. Clemson and first-year coordinator Wes Goodwin need to get right in a hurry with No. 10 North Carolina State next.
ATLANTA (AP) — Geoff Collins is out as Georgia Tech’s football coach. Collins was fired in the midst of his fourth season after failing to make headway with a brash plan to turn the Yellow Jackets into a national powerhouse through branding and promoting Atlanta’s big-city culture. Collins was dumped two days after a 27-10 loss to Central Florida left him with a record of 10-28. Collins finished his tenure with a winning percentage of just .263 — the lowest of 13 full-time coaches in the school’s history. Georgia Tech also fired athletic director Todd Stansbury.
UNDATED (AP) — Tennessee and North Carolina State have broken into the top 10 of The Associated Press college football poll. Florida State is back in the rankings for the first time in four years. Georgia remained No. 1 and received 55 of 63 first-place votes in the Top 25. No. 2 Alabama, No. 3 Ohio State, No. 4 Michigan and No. 5 Clemson all held their places. Oklahoma’s upset loss to Kansas State created room for teams to move up, like No. 6 Southern California and No. 7 Kentucky. Tennessee moved up three to No. 8. Oklahoma State remained at nine and North Carolina State jumped to No. 10.
UNDATED (AP) — A 4-0 start put Kansas atop the others receiving votes pile in The Associated Press college football poll, 41 points behind No. 25 Kansas State. The Jayhawks have not been ranked since mid-October 2009, a dry spell of nearly 13 years that is currently the longest among Power Five conference programs. Getting stuck behind the Sunflower State rivalry must have been particularly annoying to Kansas fans. Kansas’ resume has a similar look to No. 24 Pittsburgh’s. Reality Check says advantage KU. The voters are going to make the Jayhawks do more.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Fifth-ranked Clemson is hoping improved play from the offense and quarterback DJ Uiagalelei has the Tigers ready for what’s ahead. They won a wild double-overtime shootout on Saturday at Wake Forest behind a big game from Uiagalelei, who threw for five touchdowns to lead the offense. Uiagalelei has been more accurate and productive passer in his second full season as the starter compared to last year. That included helping Clemson convert a program-record 16 third downs at Wake Forest. The next challenge is a visit from No. 10 North Carolina State in a key matchup for the league’s Atlantic Division race.
UNDATED (AP) — Michigan State blew up the market for college football coaches last season by giving Mel Tucker a massive 10-year contract as the Spartans charged out to a 9-1 start in his second campaign. It was a bit puzzling at the time. After the Spartans were run over for the second straight week to fall to 4-3 in their last seven games, the 10-year megadeal is looking even more questionable. The coach-as-savior mentality is rampant in college football and it is causing desperate schools to make costly decisions, fraught with risk.
