Latest – No excuses for Wallabies coach Dave Rennie as he admits Pumas were too good.
Australia coach Dave Rennie did not mince his words when he described today’s 48-17 Rugby Championship loss to Argentina in San Juan as simply “not good enough”.
The home side ran in seven tries for their biggest ever victory over the Wallabies, who have been depleted by injury and player absences for personal reasons.
Rennie will have learnt a lot from seeing his next best in action, but with the future of regular skipper Michael Hooper uncertain after he pulled out of the tour saying he was not in the right frame of mind to play, there will be concern a year out from the Rugby World Cup in France.
“Massive disappointment. Not good enough,” Rennie told reporters.
“You could see there were four tries that were kicks in behind us. We certainly got dominated in the collision area.
“Rucks not a disaster, we just weren’t clinical enough.
Rennie played down the number of players missing from his selection as the cause of the defeat and felt the team he put on the pitch had enough in them to get a win.
Australia return home to take on South Africa in two more Rugby Championship clashes, the first of which is in Adelaide in a fortnight.

Manchester United in horror start to Premier League
Manchester United’s new manager Erik ten Hag admitted he needs to sign quality players but after Sunday’s 4-0 humiliation at Brentford, persuading any to come to Old Trafford could be a tough task for the Dutchman.
Ten Hag has become the first United manager since John Chapman in 1921 to lose his first two games in charge and with Liverpool up next things may get worse before they get better.
The 52-year-old was taunted by Brentford’s fans with “you’re getting sacked in the morning” as his side shipped four goals in the opening 35 minutes.
While former Ajax manager Ten Hag will certainly be given time to revive the club’s fortunes, the way his side have started the season has left him looking dazed.
“It is my responsibility to give an explanation. It is clear the performance was really poor. When you make mistakes like this, you can’t win the game,” he said.
“The team has to take responsibility. I feel really sorry for the fans — they did everything to support us but we let them down.”
The way United capitulated under a Brentford onslaught was alarming and follows their earlier loss to Brighton.
United sit at the bottom of the table for the first time since 1992.

Phoenix sign new overseas import
The Brazilian playmaker joining the Wellington Phoenix will make his debut shortly.
Yan Sasse, who joins the team on a one-year deal, has played 47 matches in Brazil’s top league.
Phoenix coach Ufuk Talay says the 25-year-old has joined the team in Sydney and could play as soon as Wednesday against Melbourne City.
Sasse will become the eighth Brazilian to play for the Phoenix.
Talay said the left-footed playmaker is “similar but different” to Bulgarian attacking midfielder Bozhidar Kraev.
“He’s a South American 10 so he’s technically good on the ball, explosive and is good in one vs one situations,” Talay said.
“He’ll bring balance to our midfield. We’ll have a player that can create goalscoring opportunities, while also scoring goals.”
Man City and Arsenal power to wins
Two games into the new Premier League season, champions Manchester City raised the bar even higher when they crushed promoted Bournemouth 4-0 to maintain their fast start.
Arsenal joined City on six points as former City striker Gabriel Jesus struck twice in a 4-2 win over Leicester City.
Jesus produced a dazzling display, scoring twice before the break and going close to a hat-trick on several occasions.
Leeds United looked on course for a second successive win but squandered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Southampton — one of three draws on a sultry Sunday afternoon.
City, bidding for a fifth Premier League title in six seasons, cruised to an opening win at West Ham United and were equally dominant against Bournemouth.
They wasted no time getting into their stride in the sunshine as Norway striker Erling Haaland marked his home debut with an assist for Ilkay Gundogan’s opener after 19 minutes.
City cut loose and scored a sumptuous second goal 12 minutes later when Kevin De Bruyne curled a fine strike into the net with the outside of his foot.
Phil Foden added another before halftime from De Bruyne’s assist and it was just a matter of how many more the hosts would help themselves to.
In the end they managed only one more courtesy of Jefferson Lerma’s own goal but they spent most of the second half on cruise control.

Halep reaches Canadian Open final
Simona Halep overcame some shaky serving to beat American Jessica Pegula 2-6 6-3 6-4 and reach the Canadian Open final in Toronto, where she will face either Karolina Pliskova or Beatriz Haddad Maia for the title.
Pegula put pressure on Halep’s serve at the outset of the match and wrapped up the 35-minute first set with an ace.
But a loose service game early in the second set, capped by a unforced backhand error, gave the Romanian two-time Grand Slam champion a 3-1 lead as frustration began to mount in her less experienced opponent.
Halep broke at love for a 3-2 lead in the third set and hung on to claim her 37th victory of the year despite producing 10 double faults and putting less than 60% of her first serves into play.
Big-serving Czech Pliskova and unseeded Brazilian Haddad Maia are to play their semifinal today.

Nuggets lift NBL silverware over Tuatara
Otago have defeated Auckland 81-73 in the grand final of the national basketball league at Auckland.
Otago import player Keith Williams put in a dominant MVP performance as he scored 34 points.
Whenever the Nuggets needed a basket it was Williams, the least heralded of the three Nuggets imports, that delivered.
Fourteen of his points came in the all-important fourth quarter.
Auckland enjoyed double figure contributions from Siler Schneider (16), Rob Loe (13) and Chris Johnson (13) but couldn’t replicate recent performances against the Wellington Saints and Taranaki Airs.
With three minutes to play Auckland surged back to cut the deficit to three points. But the Nuggets sealed the victory with a defensive stop on the next Auckalnd possession.
Williams scored for Otago to take the title.
